William Wragg, the MP for Hazel Grove has been elected to sit on the Education Select Committee in the House of Commons, following a ballot conducted by the 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative MPs.
William Wragg said: “I am delighted to be joining the Education Committee. I hope that my direct experience of the education sector as both a primary school teacher and school governor will mean I can contribute positively to its important work.”
"I am look forward to serving on the Committee, and to help ensure the Government is working to improve our schools further; particularly around important issues such as teacher recruitment and retention, the new fairer schools funding formula, and mental health care for children and young people.”
The Education Committee monitors the policy, administration and spending of the Department for Education and its associated arm’s length bodies, including Ofsted.
Topics currently under inquiry by the Committee include ‘Purpose and quality of education in England’, ‘Supply of teachers’, and ‘Mental health and wellbeing of looked after children’.
The Committee consists of eleven backbench Members of Parliament. The Committee's Chair is Neil Carmichael MP, Conservative Member of Parliament for Stroud.
William is expected take up the place on the committee, vacated due to the departure of Caroline Noakes MP to the Department for Transport, formally on the 22nd February.
