Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement, is looking for volunteers from across England to get involved in the First World War Memorials Programme. This week we were supported in our campaign by the vice-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Civic Societies, William Wragg MP, when he visited a workshop in Marple.
He said ‘It is so important that we remember the enormous sacrifices made by the people of the North West and beyond to secure, for us all the freedoms that we enjoy today. War memorials help us to remember the people who have given their lives. Memorials also help local communities and young people engage with local history.”
He added, “I hope people will take time over the next two years to support the work of the civic movement who are identifying, recording, and, where necessary, encouraging repair of our war memorials.”
Civic Voice has announced workshops like the one William Wragg MP attended all over the country. One of the next workshops is taking place in Birkenhead, Merseyside on Wednesday 23rd November 2016. Also on that date is a workshop in Newcastle which has been organised with the North East War Memorials Project. They have been busy in the North East and on 8th November 2016, they plan to launch a film titled 'Always Remembered'. The film tells the story of how people and communities came to terms with the aftermath of the Great War and how their grief was expressed at the time. The film will be launched at St Mary's Heritage Centre, Gateshead at 6pm.
